Rowhedge is a small riverside village in the borough of Colchester, in Essex, England, sitting on the north bank of the River Colne a little downriver from Colchester itself and close to places such as Wivenhoe and the Mersea Island area. Its position on the estuary gives it a mix of tidal creeks, salt marshes and mudflats that are attractive for boating and birdlife, and which shape the village’s character more than heavy industry.
Historically Rowhedge was a maritime community with shipbuilding, repair yards and a fishing tradition, and remnants of that past survive in small boatyards, marinas and sailing clubs. Today it feels like a close‑knit village community with local pubs and events, while many residents commute to nearby towns such as Colchester or Ipswich, so the economy combines traditional marine trades with a commuter‑base and leisure boating activity.
