Purleigh is a largely rural electoral ward in the district of Maldon, in Essex, sitting on the Dengie Peninsula with views across the River Blackwater estuary. The landscape is mostly arable farmland, hedgerows and saltmarsh, and while some residents commute to nearby towns such as Chelmsford and Maldon, the ward retains a quietly village-centred social life around its hall and local pub.
Historically the parish church of St Mary the Virgin has medieval fabric and the area contains several traditional Essex cottages and listed buildings; in the late 19th century the village became notable for a short-lived Tolstoyan-inspired intentional community. The mix of coastal habitats and quiet lanes makes the ward popular with walkers and birdwatchers and gives it a distinctly agricultural, low-key character compared with busier nearby estuary towns.
