Highclere is a small rural parish in Basingstoke and Deane, Hampshire, in south central England, set on chalk downland at the edge of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and close to the Berkshire border. The skyline is dominated by Highclere Castle, the Victorian country house remodelled by Sir Charles Barry and the longstanding seat of the Carnarvon family, whose Egyptological connections and its role as the filming location for Downton Abbey have made the estate widely known.
Locally the economy and social life still revolve around the castle and estate, with farming, forestry, country sports and visitor tourism important income streams alongside occasional filming and events. The parish retains the feel of a small village community with historic church and lanes, limited local services and a landscape valued for its parkland, historic interest and walks rather than for urban amenities.
