Wash Common sits on the eastern side of Newbury in West Berkshire, occupying a slightly elevated chalk plateau above the Kennet valley. The area still hints at its origins as common grazing land, with pockets of green space and sports pitches and a stretch of the Andover Road running through it, giving easy road links to the town and beyond. On clear days there are pleasant views towards the North Wessex Downs and even across to Watership Down.
Predominantly a residential neighbourhood, Wash Common has a mixture of housing, local shops, community facilities and active clubs, so it functions largely as a commuter suburb for Newbury, Reading and further afield. The locality is also near several historical sites associated with the English Civil War, including areas connected to the Second Battle of Newbury, which adds a layer of local interest to its otherwise everyday suburban character.
