East Hampshire

Local authority district in Hampshire, England

Coordinates:51.04, -0.93
OS grid ref:SU 75 27

The East Hampshire district occupies a largely rural part of Hampshire, much of it within the South Downs National Park. The landscape is a mix of rolling chalk downland, heath and ancient woodland, with prominent features such as Butser Hill and long-distance routes like the South Downs Way, while market towns including Petersfield and Alton provide local centres of activity.

It is rich in cultural and historic interest: Chawton is famous for the Jane Austen House Museum and nearby Selborne for Gilbert White’s natural history legacy. The district also contains prehistoric earthworks, country estates and a strong tradition of local festivals, farmers’ markets and village events that sustain a lively community life.

The economy blends agriculture and tourism with small-scale manufacturing and services, and recent regeneration of former military sites around Whitehill & Bordon has brought new housing and green-tech projects. Many residents commute to London or Portsmouth, so the area enjoys good quality of life alongside familiar pressures on transport and housing typical of prosperous rural districts.
