Chawton is a small, attractive village and civil parish in East Hampshire, Hampshire, set amid rolling chalk downland close to the South Downs. It lies a short distance from Alton and within easy reach of Winchester, with a largely rural character of farms, lanes and hedgerows that give way to a handful of listed cottages and a village green.
The place is best known for its strong literary heritage: Jane Austen's House Museum occupies the cottage where Austen wrote and revised several novels, while nearby Chawton House - an Elizabethan manor now housing a library and research centre for early women’s writing - draws visitors and scholars. That cultural profile, together with conservation protections, means the local economy mixes tourism and heritage activity with traditional agriculture and a commuter population, and community life still centres on the church and village institutions such as St Nicholas Church.
