Rowlands Castle is a compact village in the district of East Hampshire, Hampshire, England, sitting on the lower slopes at the edge of the South Downs National Park. The village takes its name from the remains of a medieval motte-and-bailey earthwork on higher ground, and is surrounded by ancient woodland and open downland that make it popular with walkers and nature lovers; it also has a station on the local rail line giving straightforward links to Portsmouth, Chichester and beyond.
Today Rowlands Castle combines a largely residential, commuter population with a strong village community - local shops, pubs, clubs and seasonal events - and pockets of agriculture and small businesses. Its attractive setting, historic core and proximity to long-distance walks such as the South Downs Way mean it feels rural while being within easy reach of larger towns like Havant and Petersfield and cities including London for day-to-day commuting.
