Rowlands Castle is a compact village and civil parish in East Hampshire, Hampshire, in the south of England, sitting on the northern edge of the South Downs and close to Butser Hill. The landscape is a mix of chalk downland, woodland and small agricultural holdings, and the village grew up beside the earthwork remains of a medieval motte-and-bailey that gives it its name; the parish also includes the small hamlet of Finchdean.
Despite its rural setting, Rowlands Castle has a lively local community with shops, pubs, a primary school and clubs, and many residents commute further afield: the station provides regular services towards Portsmouth and London. Walkers and cyclists use it as a gateway to the Downs, while locally run businesses and small-scale farming help sustain the parish’s economy and social life.
