Situated on the western edge of the New Forest in Hampshire, New Milton is a market town and civil parish close to the Hampshire–Dorset coast. The parish reaches the cliff-top resort of Barton-on-Sea, with views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight, and lies within easy reach of Bournemouth and Southampton. A railway station provides regular services towards Brockenhurst and London, which helps explain its appeal to commuters as well as visitors.
Having expanded in the 19th century with the arrival of the railway, New Milton balances independent shops, light industry and a modest tourist trade. Local life is shaped by nearby heathland and coast - Barton-on-Sea’s eroding cliffs are well known to fossil hunters - and community amenities such as the local arts centre, markets and clubs give it a relaxed, small‑town character rather than an urban buzz.
