The village of Chale sits on a ridge above the southern coast of the Isle of Wight, looking out over Chale Bay and the English Channel. It is backed by the chalk downland of St Catherine's Down, where the little stone landmark St Catherine's Oratory – locally known as "the Pepperpot" – punctuates the skyline; the stretch of coast here is notable for steep cliffs and landslip-formed undercliff terrain.
Historically a small agricultural settlement with a medieval church and old cottages, Chale carries local folklore of smuggling and coastal trade. Today the local economy blends farming with tourism, with walkers on the coastal path, visitors heading to nearby attractions such as Blackgang Chine, holiday lets and a village pub and hall that keep a close-knit, rural community feel.
