Whippingham

Parish in Isle of Wight, England

Coordinates:50.735, -1.265
OS grid ref:SZ 51 93
Dialling code: 01983 (Isle of Wight)

Whippingham is a small rural parish on the eastern side of the Isle of Wight, just inland from East Cowes and the banks of the River Medina. The village is notable for its 19th‑century royal connections: many cottages and the rebuilt St Mildred’s church were developed for staff of nearby Osborne House, and the church contains several memorials to the Royal Family.

Today the area combines quiet agricultural and residential life with a modest tourist trade linked to Osborne House and the island’s sailing culture across the water in Cowes. It retains a strong village identity, with historic architecture and lanes that reflect its Victorian estate origins rather than modern expansion.
