Aylesham is a village in the district of Dover, in Kent, England, set between the historic city of Canterbury and the Channel port of Dover. It grew up in the 1920s as a purpose‑built settlement for the Kent coalfield, so the village’s layout and many local stories still reflect that mining origin and the tightly knit communities that sprang up around the pits.
After the decline and eventual closure of the mines the local economy shifted towards services, light industry and commuting to nearby centres such as Canterbury and Ashford, and there has been ongoing regeneration and housing development. Today Aylesham retains visible mining heritage alongside community-led projects and social initiatives, making it a village with a strong sense of shared history and an evolving local identity.
