Lydd sits on the wide, flat expanse of Romney Marsh in the district of Folkestone and Hythe, Kent, England. It is tucked close to the remarkable shingle headland of Dungeness, a landscape of gravel, windswept scrub and important nature reserves that gives the area a very distinct, remote feel compared with the rest of the county.
The town has a long history - its large medieval church, St Mary the Virgin, is often called the "Cathedral on the Marsh" - and the marshlands have a strong agricultural tradition, particularly sheep grazing, alongside a quieter tourism economy. There are reminders of a rougher past in tales of smuggling, and today the mix of an active community, the nearby military ranges and Lydd Airport add modern practicalities to a place that still feels shaped by its unusual coastal and marshland setting.
