St. Mary's Bay is a small coastal village on the Kent coast in the district of Folkestone and Hythe, facing the English Channel. It sits at the edge of the low-lying Romney Marsh and offers a long shingle/pebble shoreline and wide, windswept views; the distinctive shingle headland of Dungeness lies not far to the west, making the local landscape notable for its sparse, wild character and rich birdlife.
The settlement is a mix of year-round residents and holiday accommodation - caravan parks, bungalows and chalets dominate the economy - so the place feels much quieter outside the summer season. Its history reflects Kent’s coastal past, with marsh agriculture, fishing and some remnants of wartime defences, and today it’s popular for low-key seaside holidays, walking and nature-watching rather than heavy tourism.
