Otford and Shoreham sit in the district of Sevenoaks, Kent, beneath the chalk escarpment of the North Downs. The two historic villages are threaded by the River Darent, with traditional village greens, timber‑framed cottages and the moated remains of an Elizabethan/medieval palatial site at Otford, while Shoreham retains a compact conservation area and a strong sense of old Kentish character. The landscape is popular with walkers and cyclists, with rolling orchard and hopland country framing the villages on the downsides and valley floor respectively.
Socially and economically the area is largely a residential, community‑focused part of the London commuter belt, with local shops, pubs, village halls and small businesses serving everyday needs. Heritage and rural qualities attract visitors and weekend strollers as well as residents who value village life within easy reach of London, while farming and small‑scale tourism continue to shape the local economy and calendar of community activities.
