Sevenoaks

Local authority district in Kent, England

Coordinates:51.28, 0.19
OS grid ref:TQ 52 55

Sevenoaks district sits in the north-west of Kent, bordering Greater London and straddling the chalk ridge of the North Downs with parts of the High Weald and several protected landscapes. The district is best known for the town of Sevenoaks itself with its historic Knole Park and house, a vast deer park and National Trust property, and nearby country homes such as Chartwell in Westerham, which attract visitors and give the area a strong heritage character.

Economically and socially the district mixes affluent commuter communities and traditional Kentish villages: good rail links into central London mean many residents work in the capital, while local employment centres, light industry in places like Swanley, farming and tourism keep a diverse local economy. High-quality schools (notably the long-established Sevenoaks School), conservation designations and a substantial green belt contribute to a generally prosperous, conservation-minded district with a strong sense of local history and village life.
