Located in the district of Swale in Kent, England, Faversham sits at the head of the Swale estuary where a tidal creek threads through a compact historic town. The setting blends saltmarsh and protected countryside such as Oare Marshes and the Kent Downs, and the creek, boatyards and preserved wharves give the town a strong maritime character.
With Roman and medieval roots and once home to Faversham Abbey, the town later became known for its gunpowder mills around Uplees and for brewing; the Shepherd Neame brewery, founded in 1698, claims to be Britain’s oldest. Today Faversham combines independent shops, food producers, regular markets and hop-related festivals with a lively community and straightforward rail and road links for commuters into London.
