Linthwaite and Slaithwaite sit side by side in the Colne Valley, part of Kirklees in England, a few miles west of Huddersfield. Both retain the upland valley character of West Yorkshire, with stone-built terraces, old mill buildings and sweeping views to the surrounding moorland; the River Colne and the nearby Huddersfield Narrow Canal thread through the settlements and add a strong sense of place.
Historically they grew up around the woollen textile industry and transport links - canals and railways - and many former industrial buildings now house small businesses, galleries and cafés. Restoration of the canal and the nearby Standedge Tunnel has boosted leisure boating and walking, while a lively community scene, independent shops and easy commuting to Huddersfield and Leeds give the villages a mix of rural charm and practical connectivity.
