Skelmanthorpe and Clayton West are neighbouring villages in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees, in West Yorkshire a few miles south of Huddersfield, sitting on the lower slopes and valleys of the Pennines. Both grew up around 19th‑century textile working and local mining, so their streets and cottages reflect that industrial heritage even as much of the heavy industry has gone.
Today they are largely residential with a strong community feel: local shops, pubs, clubs and annual events keep village life lively, while small businesses and commuters to nearby towns make up the economy. Clayton West attracts walkers and families to the preserved narrow‑gauge Kirklees Light Railway, and both villages offer good access to surrounding countryside, reservoirs and walking routes that underline their blend of industrial history and rural setting.
