Carnforth is a small town and civil parish in the City of Lancaster district of Lancashire, England, sitting where low coastal plain meets the southern foothills of the Lake District and within easy reach of Morecambe Bay. It developed in the 19th century as a junction for canals and railways, and its notable transport heritage survives in the well‑known Carnforth railway station, famous for its association with the film Brief Encounter and for a preserved depot and visitor facilities.
Historically influenced by iron and steel works and the rail economy, the town today has a mixed local economy of light industry, services and commuters to nearby Lancaster and the national park. Recreational life is shaped by waterways such as the Lancaster Canal and the River Keer, which provide popular walking and cycling routes, while a compact centre and active community groups sustain local events and village‑scale social life.
