Lower Lune Valley is a largely rural ward on the southern fringes of Lancaster in Lancashire, following the lower reaches of the Lune as it meanders through farmland and limestone scar. The landscape is a mix of floodplain, rolling fields and small wooded cloughs, with quiet lanes, footpaths and river-side walks that make it popular with walkers and birdwatchers as well as commuters seeking a more rural lifestyle close to the city.
Local life is rooted in small villages and hamlets with community halls, pubs and parish activities; economically the area is sustained by agriculture, rural enterprises and a proportion of residents who commute into Lancaster or further afield. Scattered historic buildings and field monuments hint at a long rural past, and conservation and landscape character are often as important to residents as the practical issues of housing, transport and flood management.
