Gedney Dyke is a small fenland village in the district of South Holland, in rural Lincolnshire, set on the low-lying, flat landscape that sweeps down towards The Wash. The village is typical of the area, with a patchwork of arable fields, drainage channels or "dykes" and a horizon of windbreaks and farm buildings; the reclaimed marshland here owes much to historic drainage schemes of the 17th century and the work of Dutch engineers, which transformed the wetlands into highly productive farmland.
Locally the economy is dominated by agriculture and horticulture, with vegetable growing and bulb cultivation important in the wider district; social life tends to centre on a handful of village amenities and neighbouring market towns such as Spalding for bigger services. Gedney Dyke’s character is shaped by traditional red-brick cottages, the parish and farm history of Gedney, and an intimate community feel set against expansive skies and rich birdlife on the surrounding marshes.
