Lutton is a small village and civil parish in the district of South Holland, in rural Lincolnshire, set in the low-lying landscape of The Fens. The surrounding land is famously flat and fertile, crossed by a pattern of drains and dykes created by centuries of reclamation; that engineered fenland gives the parish its strong agricultural focus and a wide-open, often windswept character. It lies within easy reach of market towns such as Long Sutton and Spalding, which provide services and links to the wider region.
Historically the settlement grew from medieval farming roots and was shaped by the big drainage schemes of the 17th and 18th centuries, so a sense of continuity with the land remains important to local identity. Today the economy is dominated by arable and vegetable growing, with a village community centred on a handful of local amenities, a village hall and occasional fetes and events; the surrounding ditches and wetland margins also support notable fenland wildlife, attracting interest from naturalists and birdwatchers.
