Newcastle upon Tyne sits on the north bank of the River Tyne in the north-east of England, forming a lively urban centre with easy access to the coast and Northumberland. The city is linked to Gateshead by the iconic Tyne Bridge and a series of modern footbridges along the Quayside, and it sits within the Tyne and Wear metropolitan area.
There’s a strong cultural and student scene thanks to two universities, lively music and nightlife, and notable venues and streets such as Grey Street and Grainger Town. Football is central to local life around St James' Park, while the nearby Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and Sage Gateshead (across the river) draw national and international audiences.
Historically the city grew from a Roman settlement and its fortunes were forged in shipbuilding, coal and engineering; remnants of that past mix with Victorian architecture and modern redevelopment. The area has been significantly regenerated in recent decades, balancing heritage landmarks like proximity to Hadrian's Wall with a growing digital and creative economy and strong community identity often summed up by the Geordie culture and dialect.
