Welney is a small village and civil parish in the district of King's Lynn and West Norfolk, in Norfolk, England. It sits in the low-lying landscape of The Fens on the banks of the River Great Ouse, close to the border with Cambridgeshire, and is surrounded by the seasonal floodplain known as the Ouse Washes.
The village is best known for the nearby Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust reserve at WWT Welney, which draws thousands of wintering swans and other wildfowl and brings a steady trickle of nature-based tourism; otherwise the local economy is dominated by fenland agriculture and services for a small, close-knit community. The long history of drainage and flood management shapes much of Welney’s character, giving it a distinctive rural and watery feel that attracts birdwatchers and those interested in the fenland landscape.
