Upwell and Outwell are neighbouring villages in the district of King's Lynn and West Norfolk in Norfolk, England, right on the edge of the Cambridgeshire border near the market town of Wisbech. They sit in the low-lying fen landscape and are threaded with drains, dykes and the local watercourse known as Well Creek, which shapes the flat, open character of the area and its strong agricultural identity.
Historically the communities grew up around reclamation and drainage of the fens and a tradition of market gardening and vegetable production; transport links such as the former Wisbech and Upwell tramway (which inspired “Toby the Tram Engine”) are part of the local heritage. Today both villages are small, community-focused places with village halls, pubs and churches, an economy still linked to farming and increasing interest from wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers drawn to the distinctive fen habitats.
