West Butterwick is a small rural parish in North Lincolnshire, set beside the sinuous floodplain of the River Trent. The village has strong agricultural roots - its name originally refers to a dairy farm - and much of the surrounding landscape is low-lying marsh and drained fen, prized for wildlife and good farmland rather than industry; the river and nearby wetlands attract birdwatchers, anglers and walkers.
Community life is quiet and village-focused, with many residents working in farming or commuting to larger towns such as Scunthorpe and Gainsborough. West Butterwick sits opposite East Butterwick across the Trent, forming a pair of small settlements linked by the riverine landscape and a shared rural character.
