Monkseaton is a largely residential ward in North Tyneside, Tyne and Wear, lying just inland from the coast at Whitley Bay. It has a pleasantly suburban feel with tree-lined streets, a compact high street of independent shops and cafés, and stretches of Victorian and Edwardian housing - Old Monkseaton is notable for its conservation character and period architecture.
The area grew as a commuter suburb with the arrival of local rail and tram links and today is well served by the Tyne and Wear Metro, giving quick access to Newcastle and the wider Tyneside conurbation. Its name hints at historic ties to the local monastic past around Tynemouth Priory, and the ward retains an active community life with local schools, clubs and small businesses underpinning a mixed but stable local economy.
