The small rural parish of Hetton-cum-Bordley sits in the rolling limestone landscape of North Yorkshire’s Craven district, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. It is made up of scattered farms and hamlets framed by drystone walls, hay meadows and moorland, giving it a distinctly Dales character and making it popular with walkers and birdwatchers; the nearest market town is Skipton.

Historically dominated by sheep and mixed farming, the local economy is still largely agricultural, with a few holiday lets and small rural enterprises supplementing incomes. Socially it retains a close-knit community feel and a strong interest in conservation and traditional buildings, so field patterns, barns and lanes preserve a sense of continuity with the parish’s past.
