The village and civil parish of Riccall sits on the east bank of the River Ouse in North Yorkshire, a few miles south of York and close to Selby. It’s a low-lying riverside community with flood defences and good road links (the A19 nearby), and several former clay and sand workings have been turned into lakes and nature reserves that are popular for walking, birdwatching and watersports.
There’s a sense of long continuity here: a medieval parish church and local archaeology underline historic links stretching back into the medieval and earlier periods, and the village maintains an active social life with a village hall, clubs and seasonal events. Economically the area blends agriculture and small local businesses with many residents commuting to nearby towns, while outdoor recreation and riverside tourism add to the parish’s character.
