Thruscross is a small, sparsely populated civil parish tucked into the upper Washburn Valley of North Yorkshire, within the district of Harrogate. The landscape is dominated by rolling moorland, drystone walls and the broad sweep of Thruscross Reservoir, whose wooded shores and exposed shoreline at low water make it a quiet magnet for walkers, birdwatchers and photographers.
Historically the area has been upland farmland with scattered stone farmsteads and sheep grazing; the creation of the reservoir in the mid-20th century altered land use and added a recreational dimension to the local economy. Today the parish retains a feeling of remoteness and a tiny, close-knit community while drawing day visitors from nearby centres such as Leeds and Harrogate who come for peace, wildlife and open countryside.
