Westerdale is a small, scattered upland parish set within the North York Moors National Park in North Yorkshire, England. It occupies a shallow valley with heather-clad moorland, a network of becks that feed the River Esk, and a mix of open grouse moors and commercial plantations, giving the area its character of wide skies, panoramic views and well used walking routes.
The local economy is largely pastoral, centred on sheep farming and moorland management alongside seasonal visitor activity such as walking and birdwatching; traditional stone cottages and farmsteads reflect a long agricultural history, with archaeological and medieval traces in the surrounding landscape. Socially it remains a small, close-knit rural community that balances everyday farming life with conservation and outdoor recreation within the national park setting.
