Commondale is a small village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, set high on moorland within the North York Moors National Park overlooking the Esk Valley. Its scattered houses and farmsteads sit among heather-clad moors and rolling fields, and the modest local station on the Esk Valley Line gives walkers and residents a quiet rail link to the surrounding towns.
The village has a distinctly rural character with farming still important to the local economy, while outdoor recreation and low-key tourism bring walkers, birdwatchers and cyclists. There are visible reminders of 19th-century industry in the form of old ironstone workings and railway heritage, and a small, close-knit community centred on the village hall and church that keeps seasonal events and local traditions alive.
