Morpeth is a historic market town and civil parish in south‑east Northumberland, sitting on the banks of the River Wansbeck and about a short train ride north of Newcastle upon Tyne. It grew up around a medieval market and retains a compact town centre with a market place, independent shops and a number of listed buildings, including an ancient parish church and the remains of older defensive earthworks.
Today Morpeth functions as a retail and service hub for the surrounding rural area and as a commuter stop on the mainline northwards; the town has a strong community feel, regular markets and occasional cultural events. It is also known for severe flooding in 2008, after which substantial flood‑defence work was carried out, and for easy access to the coastal and upland attractions of Northumberland for leisure and outdoor pursuits.
