Bothal is a small ward in Northumberland set along the valley of the River Wansbeck, a few miles west of Morpeth. The area has a rural feel with wooded riverbanks, rolling arable fields and a scattering of hamlets and houses that sit on the edge of the Wansbeck corridor rather than a single dense settlement.
Locally it is best known for Bothal Castle, a medieval pele tower and riverside site that gives the place a strong historic character; the wider area also bears the legacy of north-east coal and agricultural economies. Today the ward combines a quiet village community with commuters travelling to Newcastle and nearby towns, and attracts walkers and anyone interested in local history and riverside landscapes.
