Otterburn is a small upland village and civil parish in Northumberland, set in the heather and peat moorland of Redesdale beside the River Rede. Much of the surrounding landscape is given over to the Otterburn Training Area, one of Britain’s largest MOD firing ranges, so the patchwork of pasture and peat has a secluded, functional feel and occasional access restrictions when the range is in use.
The area is best known for the 1388 Battle of Otterburn, a famous episode in the long border warfare between England and Scotland, and traces of that frontier history - drove roads, old tower sites and scattered farmsteads - still shape local life. Today the local economy is largely agricultural with forestry, game and seasonal rural tourism (walking, shooting and wildlife watching), and the community remains small and close‑knit despite the military presence.
