Woodhorn is a small former colliery site and village just outside Ashington in coastal Northumberland, England, set on the reclaimed landscape of the old coalfield with ponds, grassy spoil heaps and walking routes that link it to the nearby coast. The most prominent feature is the museum complex built around the preserved buildings of the former Woodhorn Colliery, which sits beside a striking lake and country-park setting popular with walkers and birdwatchers.

Historically the area was shaped by coal mining and the community identity that grew up around the pits; that industrial past now drives much of the local cultural economy through heritage tourism. The museum and archives at Woodhorn tell the social history of the pits, house important collections including miners’ art and local archives, and host exhibitions and events that reflect both the tough industrial heritage and contemporary regeneration of the region.
