Hilsea is an electoral ward on the northern edge of Portsmouth, sitting where the city meets the approaches from the mainland. It combines suburban housing with pockets of light industry and retail, and is reasonably well connected by road and rail - the M275 and A27 give fast road access and the area is served by Hilsea railway station.
The ward is notable for its green remnants of the old defences known as the Hilsea Lines, now a much-valued wildlife corridor, and for the outdoor Hilsea Lido, a long-running local leisure landmark. The mix of community amenities, schools and small employment sites gives Hilsea a varied social and economic character, with ongoing local interest in regeneration and maintaining its recreational spaces.
