Smethwick sits in the metropolitan borough of Sandwell in the West Midlands, immediately west of Birmingham. The ward is an inner‑urban area carved by canals and railways, noted for the striking cast‑iron span of Galton Bridge and fast road links onto the M5, which together reflect its transport and industrial geography.
It grew up around 19th‑century glass and metalworking industries and still carries that industrial heritage even as much heavy manufacturing has given way to light industry, retail and commuter housing; parts of the area have seen sustained regeneration. The neighbourhood is one of the borough's most culturally diverse, with long‑established South Asian and Afro‑Caribbean communities, active local groups and a social and political history that mirrors broader changes across the region.
