Unitary authority in England

Coordinates:51.55, 0.72
OS grid ref:TQ 88 86

Southend-on-Sea is a coastal unitary authority in Essex, England, sitting on the north side of the Thames Estuary. It grew into a major Victorian seaside resort and is best known for the Southend Pier, the world's longest pleasure pier at roughly 1.34 miles, plus extensive promenades, beaches and cliffs that define its shoreline.

Today the local economy mixes tourism, leisure and retail with a significant commuter role thanks to good rail links into London and a revived regional hub at Southend Airport. The town retains a lively cultural scene-theatres, galleries and seasonal events-alongside ongoing regeneration of waterfront areas that reflect its seaside heritage and changing fortunes.
