The ward of Leigh sits on the north bank of the Thames Estuary within the unitary authority of Southend-on-Sea. It grew from the old fishing hamlet of Old Leigh, and you can still see the quay, cobbled streets and a maritime feel in parts of the ward; several conservation areas protect the historic character linked to oyster and cockle fishing.
Today Leigh mixes a lively local high street of independent shops, cafés and seafood restaurants with suburban residential streets and good rail links to central London. Nearby green spaces such as Two Tree Island and coastal marshes attract walkers and birdwatchers, and the community retains a village atmosphere with seasonal regattas and other local events that reflect both its fishing past and commuter present.
