It lies close to the wooded Churnet Valley and within easy reach of the Peak District National Park, giving the area a mix of quiet village character and attractive walking country.
The village is perhaps best known for the historic Alton estate, now dominated by the well‑known Alton Towers theme park, whose presence has shaped the local economy through tourism while the surrounding parish remains largely agricultural with small local services and a close‑knit community.
