Alton is a largely rural ward in the high country of the Staffordshire Moorlands in Staffordshire, England, sitting on the southern fringe of the Peak District. Rolling moorland, wooded valleys and the course of the River Churnet give it a scenic character and a strong network of footpaths and bridleways popular with walkers and cyclists.
The area is perhaps best known for the landscaped estate that now hosts the Alton Towers theme park - a major employer and visitor draw - which sits alongside historic features such as the 19th-century Gothic Revival Alton Castle and a small agricultural economy; local life mixes tourism, farming and a commuter relationship with nearby towns such as Stoke-on-Trent. Community identity is rooted in village life, local events and outdoor recreation centred on the attractive Churnet Valley countryside.
