Marple South & High Lane sits in the south-east of the Stockport borough in Greater Manchester, combining suburban neighbourhoods with village and semi-rural areas. The ward takes in parts of Marple and the village of High Lane, and is notable for its canal and river scenery - the Macclesfield Canal, the impressive Marple Locks and the nearby Goyt Valley give it a strong outdoor and recreational character on the fringe of the Peak District.
There’s a visible 19th‑century industrial legacy in former mills and local quarrying, but today the local economy is a mix of small shops, pubs and services with many residents commuting into Manchester. Community life tends to be lively for a suburban-rural ward, with conservation-minded residents, volunteer groups and plenty of walking, cycling and boating activity that celebrate both the historic canal infrastructure and the surrounding countryside.
