Shotley sits on the narrow Shotley Peninsula in the district of Babergh, Suffolk, England, between the River Orwell and the River Stour. The settlement of Shotley Gate looks out across the estuary to the docks at Felixstowe and the port of Harwich, making it a popular base for sailing, riverside walks and estuary birdwatching.
It has a strong maritime heritage - the former Royal Navy training establishment HMS Ganges was based here and its legacy is visible in local memorials and buildings - while the present-day economy mixes agriculture, small businesses, tourism and commuters heading to Ipswich or the port. The community is village-oriented, with pubs, clubs and volunteer conservation groups active in protecting the riverside landscape and encouraging leisure boating and waterside events.
