Shotley Gate is a small coastal village in the Babergh district of Suffolk, England, sitting on the tip of the Shotley Peninsula between the River Orwell and the River Stour. Its waterside position gives wide estuary views across to Harwich and Felixstowe, and the area is popular with sailors, birdwatchers and walkers using the shoreline paths.
Historically the village is best known for the former naval training establishment HMS Ganges, whose memory is preserved locally at the Ganges Museum. Today Shotley Gate combines a small marina (Shotley Marina), a largely residential community with many commuters to Ipswich and workers in nearby ports, and a recreational and conservation economy centred on the estuary’s wildlife and boating activities.
