Stour Valley is a largely rural ward in Tendring, on the Essex side of the River Stour where the county meets Suffolk. The landscape is dominated by farmland, small villages and the estuary and salt marshes of the Stour, which attract birdwatchers, anglers and small‑boat users and give the area a strong sense of open, riverside countryside rather than urban bustle.
Locally the economy leans on agriculture, a modest amount of tourism tied to wildlife and boating, and commuting into nearby towns such as Colchester and the port at Harwich. There are visible traces of the area’s maritime and agricultural past in village churches and cottages, and a close‑knit community feel with village halls, fêtes and conservation groups active in protecting the estuary habitats.
