Sudbury is a market town in the district of Babergh in Suffolk, England, set on the banks of the River Stour close to the border with Essex. Its compact medieval centre, timber-framed houses and market square hint at the wealth generated by a once-thriving cloth and silk-weaving industry, and the surrounding watermeadows and rolling countryside have long been a draw for artists and walkers.
Sudbury is perhaps best known as the birthplace of the painter Thomas Gainsborough, whose former home is now preserved as Gainsborough’s House. Today the town blends independent shops, galleries and a regular market with light industry and a commuter population, while conservation areas, local festivals and an active arts scene help maintain a lively community spirit.
