Claygate is a suburban ward in the borough of Elmbridge, in Surrey, England, lying on the outskirts of London and close to villages such as Esher, Walton-on-Thames and Oxshott. The name reflects its geology: the local "Claygate Beds" gave rise to clay extraction and brickmaking in the 19th century, and the arrival of the railway turned it into a popular commuter enclave with largely residential character and easy links into the capital.
Today it retains a village feel with a high proportion of period houses, independent shops, pubs and active community groups; economically it is predominantly residential with local services rather than large industry. Historic brickworks and Victorian development remain part of its identity, and residents often point to strong local associations and conservation-minded policies that preserve green spaces and the quieter suburban character.
