Gatton is a small historic village and former civil parish in the borough of Reigate and Banstead in Surrey, England, lying on the chalk slopes of the North Downs a few miles from Reigate. The area is dominated by the privately owned Gatton Park, a stretch of parkland, woodland and rolling downland that gives the locality a rural character despite its place within the London commuter belt.
Historically Gatton is best known as a notorious "rotten borough" that returned Members of Parliament until the Reform Act of 1832; today the estate grounds accommodate the Royal Alexandra and Albert School and the settlement has a very small residential population, with local activity centred on estate management and countryside pursuits. Its combination of historic landscape, parkland features and easy access to the Surrey Hills makes it of interest to walkers, local historians and people exploring the county’s quieter corners.
